Colorado

On the high plains of Colorado
Streets were warmed by young Lauren’s smile
It’s the light that crowds through a crack in the clouds
And makes a young man feel worthwhile

On the high plains of Colorado
The young men stood alone but proud
No one knows you’re cool in the wrong group in school
You’ve got to take what you’re not allowed

On the high plains of Colorado
Mothers have displaced their fears
Some smother, some ignore, some just wait behind the door
A thousand tools careening down the years

On the high plains of Colorado
Lauren thought the young men might know
When heat lightning flies as it gilds the summer skies
Can it touch us on the earth below

On the high plains of Colorado
When no one wants to join your games
You can make your own fun with some bullets and a gun
Young men out to make their names

On the high plains of Colorado
Fear and anger were running wild
Proving the hardest thing that a life can bring
Is for a mother to outlive her child

On the high plains of Colorado
Streets were warmed by young Lauren’s smile
